Sergeant Packard heard the unearthly wailing and pounding coming from down the hall seconds before the air filled with a high-pitched ding and the elevator doors opened. He stopped midstride and turned just as the doors slid apart enough to reveal one terrified-looking Sergeant Balsam surrounded by the three pixies.

Z slammed a fist repeatedly against the elevator wall and let out sharp, screaming grunts. Domino threw his head back and howled at the elevator ceiling, shaking his upturned hands in obvious grief. Echo stood perfectly still at the back of the elevator, one arm hanging at her side while the other let off an occasional burst of silver light that crashed into the top of the elevator and made all the lights flicker.

What the actual fuck?

Packard stared at the off-putting scene and couldn’t figure out what to do as Balsam hurriedly squeezed himself through the elevator doors. The man looked like he was being charged by an enemy instead of stepping off an elevator, and his panic was slightly contagious.

“Hey,” Packard called toward him, then had to clear his throat. “What happened?”

Balsam looked surprised to be addressed by another human being, but seeing Packard standing in the hall made him pull up out of his desperate sprint until he was speed-walking down the hall. “Where the hell have you been?”

“I…” Packard frowned and peered past the other NCO to see all three pixies walking out of the elevator. “Went out for lunch.”

“Well, you fucking took long enough. Did you get Major Winters’ last message?”

“What message?”

“Hey, Sergeant Packard,” Domino called. Even with tears still streaming down both cheeks, the copper pixie grinned at their favorite NCO and wiggled his fingers in a playful hello. “Fancy seeing you here.”

I work here. Packard was about to say it out loud, but Sergeant Balsam reached him and clapped a hand down on his shoulder. “He wants that report sent over to his desk ASAP.”

“Who?”

“Major Winters.”

Packard let Balsam lead him down the hall but couldn’t help looking over his shoulder at the pixie trio casually following them. “What report?”

“You know, the fucking report,” Balsam hissed. He dug his fingers into Packard’s shoulder and picked up the pace. “Can’t remember the name of it, but I’ll know it when I see it.”

“Sergeant Balsam, I don’t have any reports ready for—”

“Bullshit. You’re always prepared for everything. So we’re going to your office. Alone. To get Major Winters what he needs.”

“Sergeant Balsam,” Z called, cupping both hands around her mouth despite the fact that everything echoed very well inside these walls, “you’re taking off before the best part!”

“Yeah, you don’t wanna miss this bit,” Domino added as he shook a finger in Echo’s direction. “Honest.”

“Hey, maybe Sergeant Packard wants to stick around for the rest of it.”

“The rest of what?” Packard made the mistake of trying to turn back toward them, but Balsam’s fingers dug painfully into his shoulder, and he gave Packard a shake.

“Don’t fucking look back at them. Are you crazy?”

“But they’re obviously up to—”

“At this point, I really don’t give a shit.
